Updates from the Chair – September 2023

There are many things going on behind the scenes at the Libertarian Party of New York and so I thought I would give everyone an overview of what is happening.

State Committee

We held a State Committee meeting on September 11, 2023, and some of the business there will continue at our next meeting in early December. We have several vacancies on the State Committee and so anyone interested in joining is welcome to reach out to any member of the State Committee for a nomination.

2024 National Convention

The 2024 Libertarian National Convention is scheduled for May 2024 in Washington, D.C. One of the items of business in our State Committee meetings is the election of our representatives and alternate representatives to the 2024 Libertarian National Convention Platform and Credentials Committees. The election began in September for our Platform Committee representative, and will continue at our December meeting.

We have the numbers for the delegate allocation as well as our rank in National Members. We are currently ranked 6th, which is a drop from last time, and so New Yorkers who have not renewed their national membership need to do so before October 31, 2023. We need to be ranked 5th or more in order to have a Credentials Committee representative. If we do not reach it, the election for the Credentials Committee representative and alternate will be cancelled. Also, if you would like to be a delegate, a form has been sent out for interested individuals to sign up. We will be choosing our delegates in early 2024.

Empire State Freedom Summit

The Libertarian Party of New York’s second Empire State Freedom Summit is set for November 10-11, 2023 at the Rail Line in Syracuse, New York.

Our planning committee is working on the details and speakers for this event. Registration will be open before October.

Candidates

We have several candidates running for local office across New York State. See page 3 for a full list. If you are able to help any of these candidates, that would be greatly appreciated. Please reach out to us and we can connect you with their campign teams.

Ballot Access Lawsuit

Our ballot access lawsuit is ongoing, and the Supreme Court has scheduled a conference for September 26 in which our case is among those up for review and consideration. You can follow along with this case at the Supreme Court’s website (www.supremecourt.gov). Click on Go to Case Documents and then Docket Search and search for our case number 22-893.

Ballot Access Legislation

Rich Purtell, LPNY 2nd Vice-Chair and Legislative Affairs Director, is leading efforts to get ballot access legislation introduced that would reduce the ballot access thresholds back to the old standards. Contact Rich Purtell at rpurtell@lpny.org if you would like to help with this effort.

Website and Database

We have moved our website’s hosting away from the National Libertarian Party’s hosting and onto our own. The website will be undergoing changes over the next couple of months as we work to integrate our new database, donation pages, etc. There may be issues and broken links with the website until we can fully transition over to our new hosting platform, so please bear with us. As we continue to update our IT infrascture, we will be better prepared to help local county affiliates.
